A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE: ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY

James Dunsmuir, coal and rail magnate who served as British Columbia’s Premier and later Lieutenant Governor during the first decade of the 20th century, had Hatley Castle, the university’s principal structure, finished in 1908. Plans were prepared for King  George  VI, Queen Elizabethand their daughters Princesses  Elizabeth and Margaret to live in Canada at the start of World War II . In order to serve as the King’s royal castle, the federal government bought Hatley Castle in 1940. However, it was deemed that having the Royal Family leave the UK during time of war would be too much of blow to morale, so the family remained in London.

The family sold the estate to the federal government in 1940 so that it could be used by the military following the passing of Dunsmuir and then his widow Laura. In order to prepare reserve officers for action in World War II, HMCS Royal Roads—named after an offshore naval anchorage—was commissioned in December 1940. Prior to becoming Royal Roads Military College in 1968 (and gaining full degree-granting status in 1975), the college went by number of names.

Many of the academic staff members continued working after the military academy was disbanded. The military college’s ancient structures and the sizable gardens, both of which were once part of the Dunsmuirs’ estate, are the focal points of the campus. The historic home of the Dunsmuir family, Hatley Castle, now contains small museum dedicated to Canadian military history.

Royal Roads University became public institution of higher learning in June 1995. For Homecoming 2011, replica of Horatio Nelson’s famous adage, “Duty is the great business of sea officer: All private considerations must give way to it regardless of how painful it is,” was brought back to the Royal Roads University campus.
